Work experience while studying is essential before going into the workforce. Through undertaking work experience you will be able to not only gather a further and more thorough understanding of that chosen career field but also develop core skills and hands on experience.  A range of work experience presents well on your CV, and will give you the opportunity to build your contacts for future career prospects.

Where to look?

The best place to look for work experience is through the college your undertaking your studies with.  Most courses include compulsory industry experience within the course units.  It’s important to talk to your course advisor about what you would like to get out of the work experience as well as your future career goals.  They will help assist you in placing you in the correct placement – providing support along the way.

Preparation

It’s a good idea to have an understanding about the business you are undertaking your work experience at. Make sure you do your research about the employer and business prior starting.

·      Who are you working for? What do they value?

·      Background of the company? How long has it been around for?

·      Who are there clients?

·      What’s the dress code?

What it will give me?

·      Greater knowledge of what a certain job role involves.

·      Hands on experience

·      Essential skills that are recognised in other career fields.

·      Greater confidence in taking on tasks and using new skills.

·      Work/life skills

·      Industry experience and reference for your CV

Keep a diary or learning log

At your work experience you will learning new skills and undertaking a range of new tasks daily. It is important to record these specific tasks and record them by there specific industry name so you can include them in your CV.

Build a network

While at work experience you will be networking will people that have similar work interests as you.  Make sure you put yourself out there and build a good repour with fellow colleagues your working with – you never know when this will come in handy for future job prospects.

After work experience

After leaving your work experience there are a few things you should do:

·      Make sure they give you a reference.

·      Gather all your closest colleagues contact details for help with future employment.

·      Make sure you receive feedback on your performance  - this is important to gather constructive feedback.
