Many people mistakenly assume that a crane is capable of rigging any load up to or equaling its tonnage rating. In fact, a crane’s tonnage rating is based on how much weight it can lift at the shortest radius from its center pin. As the load radius and angle increases, however, the crane’s lifting capacity decreases. When at maximum extension, a 45-ton crane might only be capable of rigging less than 6,000 lbs.
Every crane manufactured has a load chart specifying its rigging capabilities (http://rbaker.com/

based on weight, radius, angle, and other factors. Always refer to a load chart when determining the appropriate crane to use for a rigging job.
