In the short sale process, there is an appraisal and an inspection, both of which occur closer to closing than many other transactions. The lender/s involved and the buyers are waiting to make sure the seller's bank/s will approve the contract, so typically, these two items happen right before the finish line. Because the appraiser and the inspector both need the utilities on, and many times special short sale relocation funds are tied to the home being occupied. An alternative is to simply maintain the most basic service you possibly can, and if there is no one living in the house; turn off the water at the source, so you don't have to worry about any leaks.
