Dec. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Mad as a cracker in Tiverton this Saturday

Christmas is all about presents, turkey, hopefully some snow and plenty of festive carols…in or out of tune. Well, in the sleepy mid Devon town of Tiverton, something highly unusual is about to happen and for the very first time anywhere in the world….and all in the name of crazy festive fun.

On Saturday 14th December the World Christmas Cracker Throwing Championships will take place.  No we’re not pulling your cracker!  Competitors must attempt to throw a single Christmas cracker as far as possible down a street in the town centre. The competition will be open to men, women, toddlers and even elves (you never know?) with prizes for all categories.

It not as easy as it sounds.  As with pulling a cracker, success is dependent more on technique than brawn.  The right style of throw will definitely gain more distance but it’s also about the timing; a mis-timed chuck could catch a gust of wind and send the cracker sailing backwards - embarrassing enough to send Rudolph more red faced than red nosed.  Who knows, perhaps the winner could be a child?

Sally Raynes, Wacky Nation’s Event Director and brains behind the event says, “Wacky throwing events take place all around the country and prove extremely popular but very few such events happen over the festive period.  We hope people will be inspired to visit Tiverton for our festive Christmas Cracker Chuck and even enter. After all, somebody has to go home a world champion and the holder of a world record.’

It’s expected the winning distance could be decided by a matter of centimetres, so everyone should start practising now, but save a few crackers for pulling on Christmas Day!

World Christmas Cracker Throwing Championships takes place in Phoenix Lane, Tiverton on Saturday 14th December, between 12pm and 2pm.

Tiverton is a Portas Pilot Town

The Tiverton Portas Pilot scheme aims to regenerate the town centre as part of last year’s review by Mary Portas.  The town hopes to encourage the residents of Tiverton and the surrounding villages to use Tiverton town centre for their weekly shop, inspire more visitors and tourists to visit and fill the empty shops.
