Home Helpers Educates Community on Arthritis Caregiving
Local Home Care Company Looks to Spread Awareness for National Arthritis Awareness Month

San Mateo, CA,  May 8, 2013 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that approximately 50 million adults in the United States have been told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis. By 2030, an estimated 67 million Americans ages 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. In light of May being National Arthritis Awareness Month, Home Helpers of San Mateo County is providing some simple tips to make the task of caregiving for a loved one with arthritis a less stressful experience.

“Providing care for a loved one with arthritis can be a challenging task and as a company that works with arthritis patients on a daily basis, we understand the importance of educating families on arthritis caregiving topics,” said mitch williams, owner of Home Helpers of San Mateo County. “Understanding the do’s and don’ts will assist you in making the home of the arthritis patient a safer place to live.”

Home Helpers of San Mateo County is educating the community on how they can prepare for providing care for an aging loved one with arthritis by offering the following tips:
•   Assessing independence – When visiting your aging loved one, observe their daily routine. Are they immobile? Has their hygiene decreased? Can they do house chores still? All these questions are important to consider when debating if they can remain at home.
•   Making the home comfortable – Performing everyday tasks can be difficult if you have arthritis. You can make some of these tasks easier by selecting specially designed products. There are products available in a variety of categories including appliances, kitchen, grooming, home and garden, health aids and many more, designed to make everyday life easier.
•   Transportation – For an arthritis patient, driving can become challenging and dangerous as their joints become swollen and they are unable to turn the steering wheel or worse off, are unable to apply the brakes. When approaching them about the topic, be sensitive to their needs. For a senior citizen, driving is equated to independence. Avoid attacking them and remain supportive. Talk to them about not driving in certain situations, such as when their symptoms are especially bad and offer alternatives so they can still get around as needed.
