NEEDHAM, Mass. - March 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Mar. 20, 2013 - Needham, MA - Part of Cambridge Healthtech Institute’s Bio-IT World Expo, attendees will gain first-hand insight from three plenary keynote presentations, aligned with the event theme of new trends in data generation, knowledge management, and information technology in life sciences and drug development. The presentations will be held respectively, one each day, April 9-11 at the World Trade Center in Boston. Free keynote and exhibit hall passes are available until March 29, 2013.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 - Atul Butte, M.D., Ph.D., Division Chief and Associate Professor, Stanford University School of Medicine; Director, Center for Pediatric Bioinformatics, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital; Co-founder, Personalis and Numedii.

Atul Butte, MD, PhD is Chief of the Division of Systems Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and by courtesy, Computer Science, at Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Dr. Butte trained in Computer Science at Brown University, worked as a software engineer at Apple and Microsoft, received his MD at Brown University, trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Boston, then received his PhD in Health Sciences and Technology from Harvard Medical School and MIT. Dr. Butte is also a founder of Personalis, providing clinical interpretation of whole genome sequences, and NuMedii, finding new uses for drugs. Dr. Butte has authored more than 120 publications and delivered more than 140 invited presentations in personalized and systems medicine, biomedical informatics, and molecular diabetes, including 30 at the National Academies of Science, Institute of Medicine, National Institutes of Health or NIH-related meetings. Dr. Butte’s recent awards include the 2010 Society for Pediatric Research Young Investigator Award, induction into the American College of Medical Informatics in 2009, the 2008 AMIA New Investigator Award, the 2007 Genome Technology “Tomorrow’s Principal Investigator” Award, the 2007 Society for Medical Decision Making Award for Outstanding Short Course, the 2006 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Award, the 2006 PhRMA Foundation Research Starter Grant in Informatics, and the 2002 and 2003 American Association for Clinical Chemistry Outstanding Speaker Award.

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 - Andrew L. Hopkins, D.Phil, FRSC, FSB, Division of Biological Chemistry and Drug Design, College of Life Sciences, University of Dundee.

Professor Andrew Hopkins, DPhil, FRSC, FSB is the SULSA Professor at the College of Life Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Medicinal Informatics, University of Dundee, UK. Dr. Hopkins is a leading researcher in the fields of chemoinformatics, chemogenomics and drug discovery, developing novel computational and experimental methods to improve the drug discovery process. He spent several years at Pfizer, collaborating with Chris (“Rule of Five”) Lipinski and others and helping to establish the concept of the “druggable genome.” Since moving to Scotland, the Hopkins Lab has focused on devising new informatics strategies to optimize the design of new drug molecules, incorporating advances in medicinal informatics, network pharmacology, in silico evolutionary optimization, database and machine learning techniques. Dr. Hopkins calls this concept the “chemical beauty” of drugs, measured by a new parameter, the quantitative estimate of drug-likeness (QED). He is the co-founder of a new technology platform company, ex scientia, operating at the IT/healthcare interface by using data analytics and machine learning to enhance drug design and pharmacogenomics. Dr. Hopkins holds an honors degree in chemistry from the University of Manchester and a doctorate in biophysics from Oxford. He was recently elected director of SULSA (Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance), a research community of some 11,000 biologists in Scotland.

Thursday, April 11, 2013 – In this special plenary roundtable, Bio-IT World invites a select group of CIOs from big pharma, academia and government to discuss the major issues facing today’s biosciences organization and the prospects for future growth and organizational success. The presentation will address the major issues facing today’s biosciences organization and the prospects for future growth and organizational success from the diverse perspectives of big pharma, academia and government.
