By: Guy's Automotive Jaguar Specialists The Jaguar enthusiast may want to buy a transmission right from Jaguar. This option is usually a very expensive option that could even go higher that $10,000. This transmission would carry a full dealer warranty and some customers may have this kind of money to spend on there Jaguar. In some cases, this option may be impractical if the transmission repair exceeds the value of the Jaguar. It would be pointless to waste money on a Jaguar that could not be accounted for if the vehicle was sold or reimbursed in case of an auto accident loss. A proper rebuild is the more common method of repair. Here, the transmission is removed and disassembled. After it is in many pieces, the transmission can me diagnosed to find out the exact source of the failure. All hard parts must be inspected and or replaced if they are out of specifications. Electronic parts must be tested. All clutches, rubber seals, gaskets and wearable parts are replaced. Some experience is required to ensure what the underlying causes are if any. The transmission is reassembled and reinstalled with a replacement torque converter. This method is usually about half the repair cost of the dealer and if done properly will last. A used transmission can be the lowest cost solution. More of a gamble, the used transmission is pulled from a wrecked car in an auto salvage yard. These transmissions can be installed and may work fine for years or they may not work at all from the get go. A used transmission has whatever mileage it had from the previous car it was in and there is no way to tell if they are good until they are installed and driven. If these transmissions work right and have no problems, they can save you money. If there are problems, they can actually reach the cost of a rebuild by the time you take into consideration the extra costs of removing and installing another transmission. The warranties are usually shorter than a rebuild so the entire cost could reoccur if the transmission fails just out of a warranty period. Minor transmission problems happen, but not usually. Speed sensors or transmission hoses come to mind when you think of how many jaguars come in for a minor transmission problem. These rarely happen, but if ignored, can cause catastrophic damage to the transmission if the driver ignores the problem and keeps driving the car. http://www.youtube.com/ Other transmission problems may include replacing a transmission module. Most of the transmission modules that fail are internal and are part of the valve body. If the transmission module failure is found early with very minimal driving, you may be able to replace it without rebuilding the entire transmission unit. These modules usually require programming but in some cases may come preprogrammed.
