Belgian Singer Songwriter in San Diego, Carl Durant, is releasing an “In Memoriam” picture video with his latest recording “(Not Our) Ride Home” to commemorate the tragic loss of the lives of twenty-two sixth-graders and six adults in the crash of a Belgian tour bus in Sierre, Switzerland, in the evening of March 13th 2012.

The picture video uses photographs published by Belgian newspapers in the days after the incident, showing the national mourning and coming together of the schools and surrounding communities affected by the crash and its aftermath.

The song in D-minor cleverly starts with the story of an impacted family through the eyes of the oldest child to then change the point of view to the deceased daughter addressing the surviving family members in a dream. The lyrics are phrased to resonate with all who have lost a dear beloved, old or young and therefore “All Souls Day” was chosen as the release day of this commemorative. The song itself will be released later as a free download for fans.

Carl on the sad news and writing the song...
“I literally couldn't sleep for two days after reading about it online”, Carl remembers, “I think it was around 10pm here in San Diego when the news was announced that a bus with Belgian kids had crashed in the Swiss Alps. Although I've been living here for ten years now, it still felt like a bomb dropped at home. I used to drive by one of the impacted elementary schools several times a day when I was still living in Belgium. And all of the kids from that school went to boys&girls Scout troops in the district where I used to be Scout master and later council commissioner. I kept imagining myself seeing a couple of kids missing the next meeting, and knowing they would never be coming back.”

But Carl didn’t start writing any song soon after. Asked about why, he says: “No, I literally said to myself I shouldn’t write about it. It would come across as forced, weird, not authentic. That’s what I usually think of other artists jumping on disasters. I didn’t touch my guitar for a while.”
Still, the muse couldn’t be stopped?
“Right, I felt truly sad for a week or two. Couldn't focus at work for a few days. Probably mainly due to the lack of sleep, of course. One day, I picked up my guitar again and I started playing sad chords. That’s what I do when I feel down. And suddenly it started flowing out: a melody, the concept for a song about an older sister left behind. And I knew this would take time to get it right, but would also be worthwile to finish.”

The new song “(Not Our) Ride Home” has been recorded in Carl’s home based studio and features some amazing backing vocals from San Diego Music Award winner Veronica May, known most recently for being part of the old-timey music duo “The Lovebirds”. The track has the typical “Carl Durant” mix of acoustic and electronic sounds while the vocal arrangement refers to the style of the 1930s.

About Carl Durant
Originally from Leuven, Belgium, singer songwriter Carl Durant has been playing around town in San Diego since 2009, bringing a mix of finger picked and strummed-guitar songs with a vocal sound lingering between James Blunt and Placebo. On recordings, he creates “aural landscapes” [sic Taxi’s Michael Laskow] by adding layers of electronic sounds to a backdrop of acoustic guitar in songs reminiscent of The Decemberists, REM or even My Morning Jacket. He shared the bill with Milow, Adam Levy, Jesse Thomas, Josh Damigo, Colin Clyne,... playing over 100 shows at House of Blues, Hard Rock Cafe, Lestat's West and many more.
