Aug. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- In today's economy attempting to tackle the real world without a college education is almost pure folly. There are some skilled professions that earn a good living without a college degree but more and more a college degree has become necessary

Along with a college degree comes the expense of financing the undertaking. Tuition, books, living accommodations, health insurance as well as miscellaneous expenses make this a pricy venture.

Years ago in America someone in the family going to college was a family affair. The whole family pulled together to put this one individual through college.

100 years ago More than half of Americans lived on farms. A large percentage of others worked in factories. Both were hard, dirty with long hours and for many , back breaking labor. College was seen as a way to escape this and was a dream for many American parents. Realizing it was too late for them but not for their children.

Typically the oldest son was selected for this. Only if he showed no talent or ambition for this was he overlooked for a younger son. It was not until later that daughters started to go to college. But this was seen as a place for her to find a good husband and not to be taken too seriously.

Over the years this changed to where whole families attend college. And it gradually changed to where the family no longer really obligated itself to the offspring's education.

The responsibility for financing education gradually became the child's responsibility.

As the government started to offer more and more student loans and other programs, this responsibility shifted even more.

What we are now seeing is young people with insurmountable debt, coupled with a slow economy simply becoming buried under their student loan obligations. Marriage to another college graduate usually means doubling the debt of the couple.

Like many things in life, they run in cycles.

Enter the parent college loan. Families are realizing this burden is just too much for one young person to take on.

Parent college loans ,while not new, are coming back. With parents obligating themselves for a portion of the college financing.

This also makes good financial sense. The earnings of a college grad are huge compared to the ones that do not graduate from college. Yes I know Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out of college but here is one thing often not mentioned ,

Each of these men had a plan. Not only that they had the ambition, knew exactly what they wanted. They already had their business model. They are also noted for being simply exceptional people, all visionaries. As much as we would all like to think we posses these same traits most of us do. not

For the rest of us and our families there are parent college loans available as well as other programs.

The parent plus loan is available to many parents. Often this loan is even cheaper than if the student got the loan!
