Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present RETINAL DISPLACEMENT, an exhibition of new works by Canadian-born artist Naomi Campbell exploring the alternate realities stemming from the merging worlds of the virtual and actual states.
Campbell is revealing the vulnerability of the individual created through the new world of gaming, communication, and social networks that creates a new reality transposing real world experiences into new truths.
“Suddenly, we are finding these realities assimilating onto one platform that is both real and imagined through the auspices of the computer,” Campbell observes. “The fine line that delineates the two disappears, and we live in suspended animations of time with its own hierarchy of rules of the ‘game’.”
The exhibition is comprised of a series of layered drawings, paintings and computer-generated inkjets on wood, paper, canvas and Mylar. Campbell’s use of space, line and the starved palette creates a feeling of displacement.
Naomi Campbell, born in Montreal, lives and works in New York City. An instructor at The Art Students League of New York since 2007, her work has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, among them, the Museum for the Center of Photography and the Moving Image, NY 2012, White Box, NY 2010, the Asian Contemporary Art Fair, NY 2008, Scope Art Fair, Miami 2008, the Heidi Cho Gallery, NY 2003, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japan 2003.
