Comparisons Between Fire Weather Observations (Inputs) & National Fire Danger Rating System Indices

fire weather and fire danger in the Long Island Pine Barrens

April 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Post 1995,  Mindy Block assisted with training Central Pine Barrens Commission staff on Fire Danger reporting and logistics along with a crew of firefighters and forest rangers.  The outcome was the Smokey Bear reporting system for local Fire Danger warnings.

The Fire Danger system provides us with information on surface fire spread in worst case conditions.  It doesn't reflect on site fire behavior, but gives you a general heads up.  Red Flags provide weather forecast information that is very useful when coupled to Fire Danger forecasting (which adds in the forest fuel conditions).

An interesting aspect of the Fire Danger system is that it doesn't deal with ground fires conditions. Mindy advocates for an additional Ground Fire Alert safety warning.  Usually spring fires lightly scorch the leaf litter. But due to this year's drought conditions, the rekindling of fire from subsurface smoldering, under windy conditions, is an additional danger.
