Broward County, FL, March 6th, 2012 – Tropical Smoothie Café (3 Broward Stores:  Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Davie) is pleased to announce that it will be supporting Habitat For Humanity of Broward by providing 200+ lunches for the volunteer students who will be helping to build affordable housing during their spring break between March 4-23.

Regional Manager of Tropical Smoothie Café, Greg Marcotte, commented, “We are very excited to support such a worthy cause as Habitat For Humanity of Broward.  We are always looking at ways to give back to the local community. Our three local stores will be supplying boxed lunches and smoothies for all the students”.
The students are participating in Habitat’s national alternative break program, Collegiate Challenge.  Collegiate Challenge provides the students with an opportunity to help build affordable housing in the area. The work they’ll do during their spring break will have a lasting impact in our community.  The students will be working on 10 homes in our Fort Lauderdale Community, our only “green” build site.  The tasks they will be completing are: trussing (literally raising a roof onto a home), drying in roofs, adding shingling to roofs, painting and landscaping.  The students are trained by Habitat Team leaders who also volunteer their time to lead the students on the construction site.
“Thanks to the loyal support from our sponsors, such as Tropical Smoothie Cafe, we are able to provide lunch to our student volunteers, whose impact on the construction site is immeasurable.” Stated Eliot Imhoff, Habitat for Humanity of Broward, Volunteer Coordinator.

The students are visiting from nine schools in various states.  They will work on 4-5 houses during the 3 week period and perform tasks such as wall furring, trussing, and painting.
For the past 23 years, more than 194,000 students have spent their school breaks volunteering across the country through this Habitat for Humanity program.  Habitat Broward plans to help more than 30 families this year.
