Jan. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- As well as the many floor tile materials that are on the market, there are the endless designs and styles to choose from but there are also different floor tile sizes to choose and different sizes can make a difference to the overall design of the room whether it be a large floor expanse or a small one.

The most important aspect of sizing a floor area and choosing floor tiles is to ensure that you know your measurements well, this ensures that you do not purchase more floor tiles than you need for the project. Also knowing the floor tile size you are going to choose is important and several factors will influence this choice. The size of the room is one important aspect and the size of the floor tiles can visually change the perception of the room overall.

In general smaller sized tiles work much better in smaller rooms although this doesn’t mean that small tiles cannot be used in larger spaces. This also applies to wall tiles and if you have a particularly larger space to tile, home owners can use a mix of different sized tiles incorporating standard wall tile sizes and smaller mosaic tiles which works really well. Smaller mosaic floor tiles can also be used on the floor areas but are usually used as border tiles or as a shape in the centre of the room rather than over the entire floor area.
Smaller mosaic tiles are often seen in bathrooms and kitchens used in various ways, they can be confined to the bath surround area, around sinks and to tile a whole shower wall. Other larger tiles can also be used which will add real contrast and very often different colours are also used.

Larger sized floor tiles often referred to as format floor tiles work well in both bathrooms and kitchens and will make an impressive design over larger floor expanses. The effect of less grout lines means that there is more of a flowing continuous design over the floor area and this can give an illusion of more space.

The colour will also make a difference to the overall finish of the floor area; using very dark colours in a small room may make it appear smaller where as using lighter floor tile shades will make the room appear larger and more spacious.

Home owners have lots of choice when it comes to floor tiles and they should take the time to look at the different options available before making a final choice because there are literally thousands of variations that can be used to enhance the look and design of a room.
