Why is expanding into the lighting industry, (and soon the Rug industry) such a big deal for furniture e-retailer DefySupply.com? Back in June they announced this expansion and while, on the surface, it does not seem like a very monumental advancement, it proves the scalability and potential of their unique business model.

DefySupply.com pioneered an innovative on-demand ordering process, which has proven to be successful in its 3 years since inception. That being said, it has been limited to just furniture. While furniture is, obviously, an incredibly large industry, critics wondered whether they would just stay a furniture company, or if they could build their model to encompass the entire home furnishings sector.

As proven, they can do both. At the time they released their lighting products, DefySupply had 4,100 unique furniture SKUs. They now have a selection of nearly 4,600. As shown by its exceptional growth, the thriving company could very well be one of the nation's largest home furnishing suppliers online. That is saying a lot.
How are they so much different though than their competitors? Try googling "furniture online". You'll be directed to hundreds, if not thousands, of websites that are basically just drop-shipping various wholesalers products. None of them are manufacturers, and they are essentially just relying on good site design to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

DefySupply.com on the other hand is far different. In fact, it "defies" the conventional standard that is so prevalent in the e-commerce furniture industry today. They have firm, exclusive relationships with many of Asia's top manufacturers which allows them to purchase "on-demand" from them. This network allows a factory that generally will only produce a quantity of 1,000 at a time, will supply DefySupply with virtually any quantity.
This is a highly innovative supply-side advancement and is strong reason to believe the company will only continue to grow, regardless of the economic landscape. Their expansion into lighting only highlights this fact.

It remains to be seen what other furniture, and non-furniture, industries they will expand into, only time will tell.
