Mathworks students place fifth in national research competition for high school students, to share $20,000 college scholarship.

Dec. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- The Mathworks HSMC team of Andrew Xu, Kevin Tian, and Kevin Chang has placed fifth in the national level of this year's Siemens Competition!  The three will share a $20,000 college scholarship.  Their project, "Determining the Existence of Graceful Valuations of Various Families of Graphs," was mentored by Professor Edward Early of St. Edward's University.  Their research contributes important work towards the Graceful Tree Conjecture, one of the unsolved problems in graph labeling.  The team competed against five others December 1-5 in Washington D.C.

Xu, Tian, and Chang conducted their research during the 2011 Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) at Texas State University.  Hailing from San Francisco, Austin, and Plano respectively, the three continued to work on their project after the summer.  This is the fifth HSMC team to advance to the national level in the 11 years of Mathworks teams participating in the Siemens Competition.  To date, 114 HSMC students have been recognized as semifinalists or above in the prestigious research competition.
