Nov. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the military-to-civilian recruitment firm RecruitMilitary will collaborate on a hiring event for military veterans at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, on Thursday, December 8. This event, the Hiring Our Heroes/RecruitMilitary Veteran Opportunity Expo, will be part of a nationwide initiative to increase the hiring of veterans by producing special career fair hiring events. The event will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will be sponsored by CenterPoint Energy.

The RecruitMilitary-U.S. Chamber initiative will help Corporate America respond to a challenge issued on August 5 by President Barack Obama. Speaking at the Washington Navy Yard, the President challenged businesses to hire or train 100,000 unemployed veterans or their spouses by the end of 2013.

On March 24, the U.S. Chamber had already launched “Business Steps Up: Hiring Our Heroes,” a year-long effort to help veterans and their spouses find employment by means of veteran hiring events. The U.S. Chamber has scheduled more than 100 Hiring Our Heroes events across the nation through March 2012.

Already scheduled to attend the Houston event are AutoNation, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, Belhaven University, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, CA Technologies, CCS Midstream Services, Carmax, CenterPoint Energy, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, DeVry University, Dover Fluid Management/Cook Compression, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), FFE Transportation – Group 1201, First Investors Corporation, Georgia College of Construction, Gerdau, Goodman Manufacturing Company LP, Grand Canyon University, Griffith University, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Invista, Jones International University, Marathon Oil, McLane Advanced Technologies, Mustang Cat, My Computer Career, Nalco Energy Services – Downstream, National Oilwell Varco, the National Veterans Employment Program (NVEP) of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Plastipak Packaging Inc., Redstone College, St. Thomas University, SGS North America Inc., Snap-On Tools, Strayer University, Texas Memory Systems Inc., The Art Institutes, The Kroger Company, The Ocean Corporation, Troops to Teachers, United Health Group, United Petroleum Transports, Walgreens, and World Inspection Network International.

To maximize the number of employers participating in this event as well as the job opportunities for veterans and military spouses, RecruitMilitary is offering companies that are members of the U.S. Chamber and local chambers a 10% discount on the cost of their exhibition booths. RecruitMilitary will offer further price reductions for small businesses (businesses that have less than 50 employees), and even lower rates for veteran-owned small businesses.
