Oct. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Stamford, CT - Stamford Senior Center will celebrate their 15th anniversary on November 17, 2011 with a fundraiser cocktail reception that pays tribute to the contributions to the center by Governor Daniel Malloy, center Trustee Wilbur Miller, Pitney Bowes Director Polly O’Brien Morrow and former State Representative Christel Truglia.   The event will be held at The Italian Center of Stamford, 1620 Newfield Ave. from 5 - 7:30 pm.  Guests include Mayor Michael Pavia and Bobby Valentine will MC the event.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Senior Center to honor the people who helped establish, and have continuously supported, our efforts to serve seniors,” says John Moses, center Board Member and Event Chair.  “We’re so glad to have the chance to thank Dan Malloy who, as Mayor 15 years ago, established the center and people such as former State Representative Christel Truglia, who in the early years helped us with financing. We also want to thank our trustee Wilbur Miller for his wisdom and drive and Polly O’Brien Morrow who role modeled corporate citizenship with her support for our Multicultural Program.”

Jeanne Franklin, Founding Executive Director for the center and its’ long serving head until her retirement last year notes: “We want to honor the people who have done so much for the center, celebrate those who make up the center, and help the Senior Center continue to provide its wonderful programs and services to seniors in Stamford.”

55 million people in the U.S. are over 55 years of age and 34 million are over 65 years old, according to recent stats.   That figure is expected to double by 2030.   The services provided by the Stamford Senior Center, which has seen its membership grow from just 100 in 1996 to over 1,200 today, are critical to help meet the physical, intellectual and social needs of that burgeoning population in the area.

Five days a week from 9-4 pm the Stamford Senior Center provides residents, aged 50 or older, with a wide array of services.  There are physical exercise classes (everything from Pilates to Aerobics and Tai Chi to general conditioning), current events discussion groups, Bridge and Chess clubs, art classes, nutrition and healthcare programs, evening classes as well as the opportunity to hear a wide variety of guest speakers and lecturers.   Special attention is also given to foreign immigrant residents who need help with language and cultural assimilation.

“We organize cultural sharing events as well as events that reflect their music, their food and their art,” says Franklin, who notes that over the years the Center has seen 60 Seniors from Russia, 12 Hispanic Seniors and 3 Haitian Seniors become American citizens.
