Sept. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Capstone, a leading publisher of children’s books and digital products and services, was listed as the number one brand for struggling readers for the third year in a row according to a nation-wide survey conducted by Renaissance Learning. The annual survey, titled “What Kids Are Reading: The Book-Reading Habits of Students in American Schools,” analyzed the reading habits of more than 6.2 million students in grades 1–12 who read more than 192 million books over the course of the 2009-2010 school year.

Of the 70,000 high interest/low readability books read by over 30,000 struggling readers in grades 4-5, 38 out of the Top 40 are published by Capstone imprints Capstone Press and Stone Arch Books. Titles dominating the list are from the popular series Horsepower, To the Extreme, That’s Disgusting, U.S. Armed Forces, Library of Doom, and Graphic Spin.

Capstone titles also ranked high on both of the Top 40 lists for struggling readers in grades 6-8 and 9-12. Many titles from the Library of Doom series also appeared on these lists. Reviewers have praised the series for its appeal to struggling readers: “Could be the magnet you are looking for to draw struggling readers into chapter books” (Children’s Literature), and “For librarians who save the day and kids who like a little bump in their night, these books are ghouliscious,” (Foreword Magazine).

“For 20 years, Capstone has been publishing innovative nonfiction and fiction to capture the interest of struggling and reluctant readers and build their confidence and skills. We’re honored to be so well represented on Renaissance Learning’s annual reading survey and believe it’s a testament to our high-interest, compelling and accessible books,” said Ashley Andersen Zantop, Capstone Group Publisher and General Manager.

Renaissance Learning captured the data for its survey from more than 19, 000 schools nationwide through its popular reading software Accelerated ReaderTM. The full report is available at www.renlearn.com/whatkidsarereading.
