Stem Cell Assurance launches its brown fat stem cell therapeutic and cosmetic technology program

July 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Stem Cell Assurance announced the launch of a platform technology utilizing brown fat for cell based therapeutic and cosmetic purposes.  Brown fat cells are involved in regulating metabolism and may initiate the body’s internal natural mechanism of weight loss.  

Through its brown fat program, Stem Cell Assurance intends to develop treatments for metabolic and weight loss disorders.  With an initial emphasis on cellular therapy for obesity, and its adverse effects on health such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension, kidney failure, and stroke, brown fat may have a profound impact.  

Brown fat is one of two types of adipose tissue found in the human body and is involved in the homeostasis by creating metabolic tissue capable of producing heat.  Studies have demonstrated that brown fat is present in the adult human body and may be correlated with the maintenance and regulation of metabolism, thus potentially being involved in the regulation of caloric metabolism.  

Stem Cell Assurance intends to use autologous cells (stem cells isolated from the patient) that may be differentiated into progenitor cells or fully differentiated brown fat cells that can be used for therapeutic purposes, and ultimately in the development of a small molecule drug therapy.  

Dr. Dennis Lox, a sports and regenerative medicine specialist in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, notes that the use of stem cells has been rapidly expanding in multiple areas, with clinical trials being FDA approved last year for spinal cord injured patients and macular degeneration.  

“The potential to utilize brown fat for stem cells,” said Dr. Lox, “could have a profound impact on a variety of disease states and obesity.  This would be a landmark treatment if it is found to be effective.”
