Save energy and money with energy efficient lighting

Buffalo, NY--You can literally light your path to energy savings by following a few simple tips for more efficient home lighting, according to Brian Paterson, Vice President of New Buffalo Impact, a Tonawanda, NY home energy contractor.  

Paterson said, “Improvements to your home’s lighting is one of the easiest ways to reduce your monthly energy bills. Lighting improvements can take a big bite out of your home energy bills since the average household dedicates 11% of its energy budget to lighting. Up to date lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in your home by 50% to 75%. In addition, a homeowner can save money and energy through lighting both inside and outside of the home.”

Paterson pointed out these cost reducing indoor lighting tips.

First, simply replace your old school incandescent light bulbs with new ENERGY STAR qualified Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s). They  are available in sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, and can save about $30 or more in electricity costs over each bulb's lifetime.

In addition, CFL’s produce about 75% less heat.  That helps reduce home cooling costs in the summer.
Compact Fluorescent bulbs yield the greatest savings when lights are on for a long time each day such as the family and living room, kitchen, dining room, or bedroom.

Update table, desk and floor lamps, and make sure any hard wired lighting on the porch and in the bathroom are ENERGY STAR qualified.  For more information on ENERGY STAR go to www.energystar.gov. ENERGY STAR is a government-backed symbol for energy efficient products and practices that helps homeowners save both energy and money.

Also install controls such as timers and photo cells. They save electricity by turning lights off when not in use. In addition, dimmers help save electricity because they allow lights to be reduced to lower light levels.

He added, “Of course not all tips are hardware oriented.  Mother nature can also help reduce your home’s lighting bills too. Simply take advantage of daylight by using light-colored, loose-weave curtains on your windows to allow daylight to penetrate the room. Voila!  You will enjoy nature’s natural lighting while saving money at the same time!”

Here is a cost reducing outdoor lighting tip according to Paterson.

“Most outdoor lighting is used for either decoration and security.   Use ENERGY STAR LED (light emitting diodes) products when lighting pathway lights, or step lights. Make sure your porch, garage, or flood lights are fitted with CFL bulbs,” he mentioned.
