April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Hopper paintings are still loved by many art collectors and art lovers, people love his unique use of light to capture the lonely mood of his subjects. His highly individualistic style, distant from the mainstream Abstract Expressionism, was influential in pop art and culture. And even art reproductions of his artworks remains popular today.

Edward was born in a middle-class family of dry-goods merchant, Garret Henry Hopper and Elizabeth Griffiths Smith, in Nyack, New York. Edward and his only sibling Marion were brought up in a strict Baptist culture. With a natural instinct for art, he was proficient in charcoal, watercolor, and oil painting even as a teenager. In 1899, he joined the New York School of Illustrating for a correspondence course on commercial illustration. Edward soon took transfer to the more prestigious New York Institute of Art & Design, for a painting course during 1900-06. Robert Henri (1869-1929), one of the fathers of American Realism, was Hopper’s most influential teacher. The artist made three trips to Europe between 1906 and 1910 with Paris as center. The prevalent French and Spanish trends did not affect his style.

Hopper’s early inspiration was for French and Russian art which came from his father who himself was a cultured man. Hopper was also a fine, committed student with potential in many areas of education at a young age. Upon experimenting with oils for the first time, Hopper achieved a role at an advertising agency which was to be an outlet for his creativity. Hopper was not a fan of illustration but this allowed him to make a living whilst he develop his painting techniques, which quickly shifted from a dark style to something lighter and more in tune with the French impressionists of that period.

Hopper was to stick with a style that combined impressionism and realism for most of his career and would combine portraits and landscape backdrops together in an approach which engendered a great atmosphere in many of his future works.

Edward Hopper famous quotes:

Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world.

I believe that the great painters with their intellect as master have attempted to force this unwilling medium of paint and canvas into a record of their emotions.

I find linseed oil and white lead the most satisfactory mediums.

I trust Winsor and Newton and I paint directly upon it.

I use a retouching varnish which is made in France, Libert, and that’s all the varnish I use.

If you could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.

If the picture needs varnishing later, I allow a restorer to do that, if there’s any restoring necessary.

My aim in painting has always been the most exact transcription possible of my most intimate impression of nature.

No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination.
