Feb. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Degenrative joint disease is a common issue for aging Americans.  However, what we often think is a common sign of aging or temporary injury is, more commonly, heavy wear-and-tear related to a lifestyle that is devoid of proper resistance training.  It is imperative to understand that the joints' cartilege is stimulated through very precise exercise, but it broken down through more random movements against random reistsances.  Precision is the big difference between destroying a joint and maintaining its health.

"Physical activity", alone, won't help us when it comes to degenerative joint disease.  In fact, random physical activity may provoke the problem.  Ultimately, the joints "want" a certain amount of work, with a very appropriate resistance, a very specific duration and frequency, and with the right amount of nutrition and water intake.  These are specific numbers based on each person's body's factors.

For example, if the left elbow joint benefits most (in a certain person) from six total minutes of flexion against 13 pounds of resistance, with two breaks of 90 seconds each, then it'd be very unlikely to happen upon that work during the course of an average day.  Full range movements and specificity to duration and intensity just don't fall into place so nicely.  This is why specific, calculated exercise becomes so important in strengthening joints and preventing damage.

EVERY joint in the body needs appropriate care or it runs the risk of degenerating and causing pain as we age.  How do we determine the appropriate amount of resistance, duration, and frequency?  Years of study from the American College fo Sports Medicine (ACSM) give us tremendous data on improving longevity of the joints, based upon a person's drug therapies, medical history, nutrition, water intake, activity types, activity levels, and pain or trauma experienced, etc. Once we determine the current health needs of a particular joint, it's just about goal setting and program placement.  Progress is monitored, and we slowly see improvements over time as pain and fatigue lessen and strength and pain - free range of motion improve.
