Many laser printer users have now turned to the refill of empty toner cartridges with compatible toner powder because of the extra savings generated and exceptional prints derived from the use of toner refill kits. Some cartridges though are outfitted with a lockout chip, installed usually at the rear of the unit. To commence with print jobs, the lockout chip needs to be replaced with a compatible reset chip.

The Reset Chip, otherwise know as a Smart Chip, replaces the lockout chip that is instrumental in prompting users on the dwindling toner supply of the cartridge. The lockout device was installed by OEMs not just to serve as page counter but also to prevent the reuse or recycling of empty toner cartridges. Thus, even after the cartridge has been replenished of its toner supply, the “toner out” message will continue to prompt with the lockout chip still in place. The reset chip overrides this restriction by resetting the printer’s counter so that a new cycle of printing can begin with the refilled cartridge.

Now does this mean then that cartridges with reset chips should not be refilled and reused? Of course not! Toner cartridges such as the Q6470A of the HP 3600 laser printer can be recycled provided that the lockout chip is replaced. Following the loading of fresh toner supply to the cartridge’s toner chamber, locate the lockout chip; pull it out from its compartment and install the reset chip. Detailed procedures are outlined with the supplied toner refill kit manual so that users need not worry about how to go about with it.
