Jan. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- With over 25 years of experience, Scottsdale Arizona based Tech Solutions USA, LLC  http://www.techsolusa.com have analyzed the actual costs that small businesses pay when installing Windows based servers and compared this to the free, Open Source alternative Linux.

"When you consider the costs of IT labor to support a Windows based server, it is extremely expensive", said Myles Wakeham, Director of Engineering at Tech Solutions USA, LLC.  "The biggest costs aren't the most obvious ones such as software licensing fees, etc., but its the labor required to keep the server functioning", said Mr. Wakeham.  "Linux is a free and open source alternative to Windows, but most small businesses have never heard of it, or are unaware of the benefits of open source software", he added.

Linux is the free open source computer operating system that mimics the UNIX operating system that emerged in the 1970s.  Despite its roots in older technology, Linux is the most popular operating systems for the Internet and Web Servers worldwide, and most distributions of Linux have a $0 cost of licensing.  This, when compared to Windows licensing costs (starting around $500 and increasing based on server size, number of users, etc.) is an immediate savings found.

"Another important factor with Linux is that you typically get more life out of your computer hardware investments", added Mr. Wakeham.  "Where businesses have become used to turning over computers every couple of years for new equipment, this is not required in most cases with Linux based systems.  Leasing companies love Windows because it forces many small businesses into long leasing contracts with constant re-supply of capital equipment, however if the business could extract a few extra years out of their computer hardware investments, by using a lighter, more efficient operating system such as Linux, they can save substantially in the long term", said Mr. Wakeham.

Tech Solutions have published an article on this topic that can be read at http://www.techsolusa.com/linuxbetterforsmallbusiness.html  that goes into the full detail of this analysis.  The article additionally talks to the need for regular virus updates, and security patches in Windows which is far less of an issue for Linux based servers.
