By: Bay View Academy At the… The Rhode Island FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament The annual robotics tournament is January 15, 2011 from 11 AM to 5 PM at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI. The public is invited to observe the Bay View all-girls squad and all the other competitive teams, as they show off their skills in problem solving, technology, engineering, math and science. According the First LEGO web site; First LEGO League is a global program created to get children excited about science and technology. Students between the ages of 9 and 14 solve challenges based on real world scientific problems. Students engage in research, problem solving, engineering and programming. Students who participate in FLL work in teams, develop communication skills, think creatively, and discover there is more than one solution to most problems. FLL is also known for its core values which emphasize friendly sportsmanship, respect for others and community involvement. The tournament task: Working in teams of three to ten children, and guided by at least one adult coach, teams have eight to twelve weeks to: •Build an autonomous robot to carry out pre-designed missions in matches lasting 2 minutes and 30 seconds. •Analyze, research and invent a solution to a real world problem in the Biomedical or Biotechnology field. 500+ local children on over 60 teams from across Rhode Island go head-to-head, putting 3 months research, design, and programming to the test in a regional FLL Championship Tournament to win honors and recognition. The FLL season will culminate with the FLL World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri , April 27-30.
