-A New Dimension to an Already Thriving Service

(CALGARY, ALBERTA) The Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta (CPAA) and BluPlanet Recycling have formed a unique partnership that will add a new dimension to the already extremely popular condominium recycling services of BluPlanet. Still in the pilot stage of development, the program allows BluPlanet patrons at a handful of participating complexes to donate used clothing to the CPAA without leaving their building.

“The pilot project has been very well received,” says Scott Rand, one of the BluPlanet owners. “Within the first four or five days there was 400 to 500 pounds of donated clothing overflowing from the bins and I personally had to do a Saturday pickup at one location to eliminate the overflow... We hope to continue this partnership and plan to grow this project from the pilot stage to provide this service to all of our customers.”

BluPlanet Recycling, having been in business for just over a year, has earned contracts to collect recyclables from over 4,000 condominium unit owners in the city. This equates to roughly 25 tons of recycled material each month. In 2009, through the CPAA’s clothing donation program, over 3,588,000 pounds of clothing were diverted from provincial landfills and this new partnership stands to substantially increase that number.

Being a community oriented organization; BluPlanet’s attitude towards corporate sustainability is to be a business from which everyone can benefit. Not only benefitting the environment, the company is actively involved in supporting several Calgary nonprofits, including CPAA. Already gaining serious momentum, having become Calgary’s largest condominium recycling company in just over a year, BluPlanet hopes to continue its growth and expand upon current services to include townhomes and other multi-family dwellings.

"The CPAA is committed to our environment,” says Diane Bukmeier Director of Operations for CPAA.  “Partnering with BluPlanet and being involved with their innovative recycling programs ensure unnecessary items are not disposed of in our landfills while generating invaluable funds for the CPAA. These funds directly support our programs and services offered to persons with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.  BluPlanet offers a win-win program that completes the circle to our environment, our donors and our members"

Since 1995, the Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta has been generating valuable funds through the collection of gently used clothing, bottles, household items and small pieces of furniture. The funds generated support the programs and services offered to individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities while striving towards a greener Alberta.
