Coventry goes overboard for RNLI

A transport museum in the heart of the country provided the unlikely venue for a special maritime celebration.

June 22, 2010 - PRLog -- A transport museum in the heart of the country provided the unlikely venue for a special maritime celebration.
The iconic Coventry Transport Museum played host to an event organised by the Coventry Branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) which has celebrated raising £11,100 for the charity.
The branch has been raising money for the RNLI for over 30 years, and despite being based further away from the coast than any other branch, the dedicated team has continued to successfully raise valuable funds.
The cheque was presented to the RNLI by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire presenter Bob Brolly and received by long-serving president of the Coventry Branch of the RNLI, Harvey Williams.
Harvey Williams said: “We are overwhelmed by the support we have received from the people of Coventry and we are absolutely delighted to have recorded this fantastic sum of money in a period of just 12 months.
“The high number of people who attended the event gave an indication of the strength of support in the region for the RNLI and the recognition of the important work the voluntary lifesavers carry out, not just around the coastal waters, but across the entire country – including flood plains.
“I regularly hear of people in the city who have called on the vital services of the RNLI and the money we have raised will go towards helping the brave volunteer boat crews protect lives night and day, in all weathers, throughout the year.”
The money was raised through street collections and the sale of RNLI Christmas cards, the team of just eight fundraisers, led by Coventry Branch chairman Grant Matthew and secretary Bernard Brownhill, raised the funds over a 12 month period.
The event at the Coventry Transport Museum included a RNLI lifeboat on display outside the main entrance to the museum and Coventry Model Boat Club provided some of their models for display at the special event.
Coventry Sea Cadets were also in attendance and also brought one of their boats to the site.
Pupils from Earlsdon Primary School were also invited to be special guests at the event having previously been presented with the national Youth Supporter Award from the Duke of Kent on behalf of the RNLI in recognition of their fundraising efforts.
If you wish to donate to the Coventry Branch of the RNLI or to become involved in fundraising activities contact Grant Matthew, RNLI Coventry Branch chairman, on 01676 532847.
