June 6, 2010 - PRLog -- SRM University, in association with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has unveiled plans of launching a nano-satellite — SRMSAT — around July 2010. Accordingly, an MoU was recently signed between the two institutions. Select students and faculty members from SRM University are designing and developing a polar orbiting satellite that will collect data on greenhouse gases across the globe. The progress of the project is being guided and reviewed by faculty members of SRM University and scientists from ISRO. The satellite will eventually be launched alongside one of ISRO’s own satellites.

The 15 watt satellite will weigh between 10 and 15 kg and measure one meter cube. The project is estimated at Rs 2 crore and the construction of the satellite is on within the university’s premises. “This project is aimed at increasing the technical expertise of our staff and students and giving them the rare opportunity of constructing a satellite first-hand with ISRO scientists guiding them. We want to prove that our students are worthy of this feat. We hope to launch a satellite once in every two years, of course, with different scientific objectives,” says P Satyanarayana, vicechancellor, SRM University.

The project is currently in its final design phase, and its sub-systems are managed by 45 third and final year students from the ECE, EEE, IT, computer science and mechanical departments and 18 faculty members from SRM University. The project’s Preliminary Design Review (PDR ) is scheduled for January 2010, and its Critical Design Review (CDR) is scheduled for March.

SRM is located at SRM Nagar, Kattanakulathur, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu- 603203.
