Delhi University Admission grind starts on dull note

May 30, 2011 - PRLog -- THERE were no serpentine queues and colourful crowds on Day One as the admission grind in Delhi University ( DU) started on a mellow note. The university started selling information booklets on Saturday and also held the first Open Day sessions.

As DU is not selling admission forms this year, the crowd of students and parents at North Campus was much thinner than in the past. Only 2,000 information booklets were sold on Saturday as opposed to 40,000 that flew off the counter on the first day of the admission calendar in 2010.

The registration for admission under the SC/ ST and physically challenged quota, too, was slow as only 122 and 11 students respectively turned up on the first day.

“We were expecting fewer students as there are no pre- admission forms and that’s why we had reduced the numbers of centres selling information booklets from 16 in 2010 to four this year,” J. M. Khurana, dean, students welfare, said.

DU also wound up form sale for Combined Aptitude Test for English ( CATE). A record 14,000 forms were sold compared to 10,000 in 2010. CATE provides students a chance to secure admission in English ( honours) across 21 colleges.

The head of the English department, Sumanyu Sathpathy, said applicants need to pick up their admit cards on June 5 from designated centres. The list of centres will be uploaded on DU website by June 1.

At the Open Day session, counsellors informed students and parents about the possibility of a few colleges conducting online registration and online student profiling. The Shri Ram College of Commerce and the Hansraj College are among the institutions that will do online profiling.

“We will begin our online profiling from Monday. But those who haven’t registered online can also claim admission if they meet our cut- off marks,” SRCC principal P. C. Jain said.

Hansraj will offer a fiveyear integrated course in earth science from this year. It will offer 30 seats in this programme. Principal V. K. Kawatra said students who have passed Class XII board exams are eligible after checking their 12th results here http://www.indiaacademic.com/results/12th-results.html

Applicants should have studied physics, chemistry, mathematics or biology in Class XII. The admission procedure is the same as other undergraduate courses. The cut- off lists will be declared according to the DU schedule. Students can be employed in disaster management agencies, oil companies, the cement industry and the town planning sector.
