June 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Under the Fire Safety Order 2005 it has become a legal requirement for business owners to provide Fire Safety Training for its staff, at macdonald martin we aim to help you meet your obligations with a range of quality training and consultancy services available nationally.

Fire Safety Training For New Staff

When you have a new employee arriving for their first day of work, information and instructions concerning health and safety in the workplace, and in particular Fire Safety, should be given on the first morning of work.

For the employer, it is their duty to provide information as neccessary to ensure the health and safety at work of their employess, including the fire safety.

Staff should each be given written information on:

*  Risks to their health and safety and any hazards present their workplace
*  The company policy on fire safety
*  The fire precautions and preventive measures provided by the company for their safety
*  The means of escape
*  Tthe means of the warning of the outbreak of fire
*  The means provided for fighting fire

Depending on the size of your business, you will usually have one maybe more than one Fire Warden, so what duties will the Fire Warden/Marshall cover?

The main duties of the fire warden is to:

* When a fire occurs take effective and appropriate and effective action
* Are the escape routes available for use,
* identify hazards in the workplace,
* record and report their observations,

If a fire is discovered, the fire warden should:

* ensure that the alarm has been raised
* evacuate staff from the building or area involved
* check that any staff or visitors with disabilities are assisted as planned,
* call the emergency services and give details of the location, severity and cause of the fire, if known,
* fight the fire if it is safe to do so,

On hearing the emergency signal, the fire wardens should ensure that everyone leaves the area as quickly and orderly as possible. Electrical equipment should also be turned off and windows shut if possible.

The warden should then go to the assembly point and take part in the roll call procedure there. Before re-entering the building the fire warden should ensure that have permission to do so by the fire brgade officer.

When it comes to Fire Risk Assessments all Fire Wardens have an important role to play.
There may be changes or modifications the the exisiting documentation. They have to be aware of these and identify with these. Ongoing training will ensure that your Fire Warden can keep all your staff in a safe working environment. Any hazards that may be perceived should be reported to the fire safety manager who should consider them, in the light of the Fire Risk Assessment, at the earliest opportunity.
