Highest Motorable Road

May 26, 2010 - PRLog -- SpiceRoads Cycle Tours is reaching new altitudes with the launch of India as a destination.  Cycling two of the three highest motorable passes in the world and peaking at 5,596 m/18,359 ft, this 14-day tour through northern  India's Nubra Valley and the high altitude mountain desert of Ladakh isn't for the fainthearted.

The trip starts from New Delhi with a spectacular one-hour flight over the mountains to the northern Indian town of Leh 3,500 m/11,480 ft. After acclimatising in Leh valley with easy cycles to Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, palaces and villages as well as a rafting trip, riders on this tour will be among the first to bicycle a new road over Warila pass (at 5,578 m/18,300 ft the third highest road pass in the world) and through the beautiful Sakti and Nubra valleys, meeting up with the old Silk Route. This tour ends on the highest note possible, a cycle up (and of course down) the highest motorable road in the world -- Khardungla pass.

Along the way, riders will be entranced by a breathtakingly beautiful landscape of colourful granite cliffs that rise from the ground to form gorges, archways and spires that are framed in brilliant blue skies. Ancient monasteries are dramatically perched on top of cliffs and in caves, reflecting the ancient and rich Tibetan Buddhist cultural background of this land of high passes, rugged terrain and hospitable hardy Ladakhis.

Accommodation on this trip will be in hotels when possible, but for four nights camping will be the only option due to the remoteness of the route. There is no technical riding involved on this tour as the road surfaces are almost all paved with the primary challenge, for even fit riders, is cycling at such extreme high altitudes. However, this trip is fully supported and any weary cyclists can take breaks in support vehicles if required.

Cycling 520 kilometers in 8 cycling days this tour of India's Nubra Valley is a remote and challenging ride through stark landscapes that makes it a unique destination for cyclists.

Departures in 2010 for this 14 day/13 night adventure are June 27 and August 15. A special introductory rate of US$1,675 is  being offered for these departures. In 2011 the tour will depart on June 26 at US$1,950.
