By: Serina Choi According to NGX co-founder Reggie Burton, “Dave’s background in research is a perfect fit for Nevada Gaming Xchange because we identify the business issues of the day and solve them. I’ve known Dave for almost a decade and his expertise in gaming and hospitality will help us provide real-time marketing solutions to the industry.” In his new role, Schwartz will lead NGX’s strategic development and corporate initiatives, including the creation of training and certification programs aimed at teaching meeting and convention sales professionals how to increase business by integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into the sales process. According to Schwartz, decreases in convention travel from meetings backlash cost Las Vegas approximately $2.1 billion in lost visitor spending alone in 2009. About $735 million of that loss was because of questions of perception. “You can’t control the economy, but you can shape the image of your resort destination and meeting,” Schwartz said. “Managing these perceptions is a necessary first step in turning the Las Vegas economy around.” A native of Atlantic City, New Jersey and former casino employee, Schwartz brings an extensive research background to his consulting role with NGX. As Director of the Center for Gaming Research, Schwartz oversees the largest collection of English-language materials about gambling in the world and is responsible for the university’s gaming studies portal, http://gaming.unlv.edu. He received his Ph.D. in United States History from the University of California Los Angeles in 2000 and has written three books on the evolution of gambling in Las Vegas, across America, and throughout the world. He has taught classes on the history of gambling and its social and economic impacts and writes regularly on gaming and tourism issues for Casino Connection, Global Gaming Business, and the Las Vegas Business Press. Schwartz will work closely with Burton, former public relations executive with the San Diego Chargers and MGM MIRAGE, in establishing the company’s sales training certification programs across the meetings and convention industry.
