| Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc, (SEM Link) Kickoff 2009-10 Programs YearBack-to-School: Students Need Not Fear Science and Math With the Right Tools
By: Tokiwa Smith The Math and Science Career Academy now includes an expanded Science Café with monthly informal and interactive scientific seminars that engage K-12 students, parents and educators in discussions of real-world applications of science, engineering and mathematics. Schools and community organizations will also have the opportunity to request undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals to come to their schools to participate in hands on activities in math and science or serve in career exploration activities, such as career fairs. SEM Link will continue to accept applications for its Experimental Design Mentoring Program, which provides opportunities for students to receive a mentor and supplies for completion of their science and math fair projects. A new service for this program is that educators will have an opportunity to request individuals to provide group mentoring for their classrooms in preparation for the math and science fair. This program will also provide judges for math and science fairs when educators request them four to six weeks before the fair. “The kick off of our 2009-10 program year in conjunction with the start of a new school year ensures that students will start the year off right,” Executive Director and Founder Tokiwa Smith said. “The expansion of our Experimental Design Program is designed to guide more students through the successful completion of a math or science fair project. With the right tools, we believe that students will be excited about math and science, and they will be successful.” SEM Link is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, founded in 2005 that promotes student achievement and career exploration in math and science for K-12 students by connecting them with individuals with backgrounds in science, engineering and mathematics. SEM Link has a two-core program model, Experimental Design Program and Math and Science Career Academy. These programs provide students with opportunities to develop their math and science skills by enhancing the classroom learning experience and teaching them skills that are transferable to other areas of life. Since its inception, SEM Link has enhanced educational experiences for over 1000 Metro Atlanta youth through hands on math and science activities, career exploration and exposure to real world applications of math and science.
