Rossport Kayak Symposium Returns

Paddlers' weekend celebrates new Lake Superior water park

April 17, 2008 - PRLog -- Wawa, Ontario — Naturally Superior Adventures and Superior Outfitters are celebrating the world’s largest body of freshwater and Canada’s newest National Marine Conservation Area by bringing the Rossport Islands Kayak Symposium back to the North Shore of Lake Superior June 20 to 22, 2008. Based in the quaint village of Rossport, Ont., located on the Trans-Canada Highway about 180 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, the weekend event includes presentations by adventurers and photojournalists Gary and Joanie McGuffin (http://www.garyandjoaniemcguffin.com)
and sea kayak instruction and tours for paddlers of all levels. Special interest workshops, including yoga, photography and first aid, as well as a family program, makes this sea kayak festival appealing to everyone.

The Rossport Islands Kayak Symposium was Ontario’s premier gathering of sea kayakers for nearly a decade. After a four-year hiatus, Wawa, Ont.-based Naturally Superior Adventures and Rossport, Ont.’s Superior Outfitter have revamped the weekend to appeal to paddlers and non-paddlers alike. Besides great sea kayaking, the event features great meals, a Saturday night concert and exceptional accommodations in the Rossport area. It also includes a stop on the Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour of award-winning outdoor films.

“We’ve made the weekend activities accessible to everyone,” says Naturally Superior Adventures director David Wells. “We want to gather in Rossport and celebrate sea kayaking, wilderness and the newly created Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area.”

The cornerstone of the Rossport event are guided half- and full-day sea kayak tours on Lake Superior that visit some of the scenic highlights of the new water park. Tours will explore the legendary Rossport group of islands, including the historic lighthouse at Battle Island, as well as venturing further afield to discover aboriginal rock paintings,
ancient fossils and voyageur resting places. The treasures of the new National Marine Conservation Area will come to life with an interactive slide presentation from Gary and Joanie McGuffin on Saturday evening.

Wells describes the Rossport Islands Kayak Symposium as as an ideal event for beginners looking for an enjoyable way to try kayaking and experienced paddlers looking to learn new skills and explore a world class wilderness coastline. He’s most anticipating the camaraderie of bringing over 100 sea kayakers to the village of Rossport.

Participants can expect experienced, service-oriented instructors, guides and support staff with a keen interest in sea kayaking and knowledge of Lake Superior’s natural history. The event will also showcase Rossport’s renown hospitality and the diverse tourism industry of northwestern Ontario. Naturally Superior Adventures has offered
guided sea kayak tours on Lake Superior since 1994 and was recently rated among the ten best kayaking outfitters in the world by National Geographic Adventure magazine.
