Later, he left the country as a refugee and first sought asylum in Sweden and then France. After he received asylum in France, he used his athletic prowess and determination and through intense practice, gained a position on the Athlete Refugee Team. Idbafdil competes in the 3000m steeplechase event under the banner of the Athlete Refugee Team. His skill and training helped him clock a best time of 8:34.72 at the Stade Raymond Troussier in Decines, France. It also helped him qualify to receive financial aid from his host country of France. Idbafdil's Legacy as an Athlete and a Voice for the Displaced Solidifying his position on the Athlete Refugee Team took Idbafdil a lot of hard work and perseverance.
