| ![]() Modena: The Call of the Homeland by Alex BlochJourney back to 1930s Berlin, where democracy fought a losing battle with dictatorship in the years before World War II. Meet liberal Berliners who secretly post flyers around the city at night espousing freedom, while the Gestapo violently search for these criminals publicizing their views against Hitler. When the liberals see their friends leaving the Germany that they used to love, one couple heading the group, Gertrude and Erich, finally decide it's too dangerous to stay in Berlin and relocate in 1937 to Modena, Italy, where they begin musical careers. Gertrude and Erich were married after Gertrude's first husband was killed in a battle with the Nazis. These fights were common in Berlin from the late 1920s until Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933. Hitler's troops eventually engulfed Europe and intruded on Modena, the once peaceful Italian refuge where Gertrude and Erich's flight to peace took them. How much will freedom cost this time around? About the Author: Born in Berlin, Alex Bloch escaped Germany at age nine, just before the start of WWII. Emigrating to America, he studied mechanical and industrial engineering at MIT and Columbia University, working in those fields in the U.S. and in Israel, where he emigrated in 1968. After retirement from the engineering field, the author studied history, receiving a Ph.D. from Tel Aviv University in 1971, where he taught for six years. "After leaving Tel Aviv University, I started to write historical fiction books, and this is my 13th." "Alex Bloch's Modena: The Call of the Homeland offers a fascinating look back at one of the most violent periods of modern history. Its lessons are timeless and can easily be repeated," – Lynn Eddy, VP of Acquisitions, Strategic Book Publishing. Publisher's Website: https://sbpra.com/ End
