"Returning to Africa is a Sankofa moment," said Tyner. "It reflects the philosophy of "go back and fetch it" It also means "we must return to the source." The Sankofa trips foster learning and growth as community members explore history and build connections to their heritage.

Registration is now open and individuals can register online. The cost is $4,000 and includes:
  • Hotel
  • Ground Transportation
  • Meals
  • Tours and visits
The return to Ghana experience is an opportunity for African Americans to recapture their cultural heritage, pride, and strength. The trip includes community members, educators and business leaders. The goal is to build lasting relationships and strategic partnerships that foster growth and development in Africa.

Tyner is the founder of the nonprofit organization Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute (PPGJLI). The organization is committed to community building across the African Diaspora. These efforts include promoting cultural preservation through the arts and humanities.  In addition, PPGJLI seeks to inspire the next generation of leaders by supporting literacy initiatives and hosting an annual youth leadership summit in Ghana.

Tyner has conducted a series of Sankofa trips to Ghana. In honor of the 2019 Year of Return that marked 400 years since the first enslaved people arrived at Point Comfort, VA in the English colonies, Tyner and PPGJLI (https://www.ppgjli.org/) hosted a pilgrimage for a group of Rondo community elders. Sankofa trips are an opportunity for individuals to pause, reflect and act. It's a time for those of African descent to reconnect with their ancestors and the land they cherished (https://checkout.square.site/merchant/5C2XJDN0HQ6JN/check...).
