Prague Shootings Might Have Been Prevented

As With MSU, Locks on Classroom Doors Could Have Saved Lives and Prevented Injuries

WASHINGTON - Dec. 21, 2023 - PRLog -- Still another shooter has killed and injured students, this time at Charles University in Prague, with early reports of 15 dead and many more wounded.

But some of the injures might have been prevented at virtually no cost if the university has adopted the major suggestion in an international report on what universities should do in preparation for a possible shooter on campus, say public interest law professor John Banzhaf, citing:
UNIVERSITY WORLD NEWS - How Can Universities Tackle the Threat of Active Shooters? (https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20221011124140599)

Banzhaf, who has served as as both a security officer and security consultant, notes that a major U.S. university was recently forced to pay $15 million to the families of three students killed by a gunman for the same basic failure: MICHIGAN STATE [MSU] SHOWED HOW - Underprepared Colleges and Universities Can Be Legally Liable For Shooter Killings

In both situations it appears the universities did not follow the advice of more than a dozen expert organizations and individuals to have classroom doors which can be locked, preferably from the inside, so that no one has to step outside to lock the doors and risk being shot.

Two different media accounts of the Prague shooting indicate that the students tried to barricade the doors.  No shooter has ever breached a locked classroom door, but several students and faculty have been injured, and in one case killed, trying to barricade doors to keep out a shooter.

In the MSU cases which settled for $15 million, the allegations of negligence in a lawsuit included a lack of classroom doors that could be locked from the inside, says Banzhaf.
