DROITWICH SPA, U.K. - May 25, 2023 - PRLog -- Dr Joe Oliver and Dr Ray Owen are thrilled with the success of their charity training event, "Facing the Storm" in aid of the Developing Nations Training Fund. Over 450 health and social care professionals, community support workers and spiritual carers attended and US $5,000 (£4,000) was raised to fund scholarships for professionals in the developing world for much needed training in behavioural sciences.

Joe and Ray had worked together for many years when Joe came up with the idea of running a specific charity event. Joe is a director at Contextual Consulting, who deliver Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training. Ray is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years working within the NHS. Both are published authors and Ray's Facing the Storm book was sent out to all attendees. The audience was, appropriately, very international, with participants joining us from Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Joe says "It was great to welcome so many people to our workshop, who have the challenge of providing support to those facing difficult times in their lives. We'd like to thank them for supporting us in our goals of delivering quality training for professionals and, in the process, enabling us to raise money for a charity that is dear to my heart". Ray was also delighted that so many professionals enjoyed the training. "I was really keen to get this book into people's hands, as it will be very useful in the wider community. Having the workshop meant we delivered added value to the book with the training. I hope attendees will go on to use this in their dealing with clients needing palliative care, or facing difficult life choices due to chronic illness, disability or other emotionally charged, life-changing events".

Co-Chairs of the ACBS Developing Nations Committee Wendy Shoesmith and Eugene Koh said, "It was great news for us to receive this large donation and our thanks go to Joe and Ray for their time organising and running this workshop. The Developing Nations Fund helps sponsor the development of professionals who are practicing ACT training others, and researching ACT in countries where it is difficult to access any form of psychological therapy. Every donation to our developing Nations Fund can make a huge difference because the professionals we sponsor train and support many others. These professional often play an important role in developing public policy and deciding what kinds of services are available".

If you would like to donate to the fund, there is an option for ACBS members to donate on registering for the ACBS World Conference, being held this year in Cyprus on 24th – 28th July (https://contextualscience.org/wc2023).  You can also donate to the fund here (https://contextualscience.org/developing_nations_fund).
