"Applied Materials was the top company, registering a market share of 19.8% in 2022, up from 19.4% in 2021, "noted Dr. Robert Castellano, President of The Information Network. "Applied Materials' revenues grew 2.2% in 2022 while the global equipment industry gained 8%.
The chart below shows individual market shares for the Top 5 individual equipment companies. KLA showed the greatest growth in share, increasing from 6.8% in 2021 to 8.6% in 2022.
Tokyo Electron's (TEL) share increased significantly, from 13.2% to 14.4% based on its 10.4% YoY revenue increase. TEL is Applied Materials' greatest competitor. Another strong competitor is Lam Research, who's market share decreased from 15.1% to 12.6% in 2022, as a result of a YoY growth of -9.9%.
Applied Materials competes directly with several companies: ASML in metrology/inspection;
Lam Research in deposition and etch; Tokyo Electron in deposition and etch; KLA in metrology/inspection.
"Based on an overall WFE market in 2022 of $98 billion, the top five companies grew 7.1% while the overall market grew 8.0%. That means that the remaining smaller competitors as a whole gained market share of the overall market from 27.8% in 2021 to 28.4% in 2022," added Dr. Castellano.
