MRI Reveals Significant Brain Abnormalities Post-COVID

MUMBAI, India - Jan. 20, 2023 - PRLog -- In the months after the COVID-19 infection, changes to the brainstem and frontal lobe in patients have been identified by researchers. These affected areas of the brain are linked with fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headache, and cognitive problems. Researchers have uncovered this identification by using a particular type of MRI in patients after they recovered from COVID-19. It is suggested by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that about one person out of five will likely develop long-term effects from COVID-19. The neurological symptoms associated with long COVID are difficulties when thinking or concentrating, sleep problems, headaches, lightheadedness, changes in smell or taste, and depression or anxiety. But recent studies have found that changes to the heart, lungs or other organs may be associated even in asymptomatic patients with COVID. These observations are produced through the MRI-compatible monitor, and more studies have emerged from analyzing the situation to focus on the lasting consequences of the disease.

Researchers involved in the study used susceptibility-weighted imaging to analyze the after-effects of COVID-19 on the brain. The magnetic susceptibility will show how much certain materials like blood, iron, and calcium will get magnetized in an applied magnetic field. This will determine the neurologic conditions like microbleeds, vascular malformations, stroke, and brain tumors. According to Sapna S. Mishra, a Ph.D. candidate from IIT Delhi, "Our study highlights the new aspect of the neurological effects due to COVID-19 and reports many abnormalities in the survivors".

The researchers analyzed the susceptibility-weighted imaging data in 46 COVID-recovered patients and 30 healthy controls. Among the patients who showed changes in the brainstem and frontal lobes, the researchers also found a difference in the right ventral diencephalon region of the brainstem. This specific region is associated with many crucial bodily functions. Further, the researchers continue to conduct the study and analyze a longitudinal study to determine whether these brain abnormalities will continue to show for a longer time.
