Mr. and Ms. Mentoring: Helping to Keep At-Risk Youth on the Straight and Narrow

HOLLY HILL, Fla. - Dec. 7, 2022 - PRLog -- Mr. And Ms. Mentoring, Inc. is a Holly Hill, Florida-based non-profit that offers services aimed at low income, high risk youth, with the goal being to keep kids on the straight and narrow so they make the right decisions in life.

"We deal with kids who have criminal issues, kids who are in foster care, come from single parent homes, or who are experiencing poverty," said owner and CEO Derrick Collins. "Our ages range from 9 to 18, and we provide one-on-one intensive counseling and case management for the kids and their families."

In addition to one-on-one support, Mr. And Ms. Mentoring also offers group counseling and meetings on a weekly basis, in addition to a number of monthly group activities.

"A lot of our group activities involve team bonding and physical fitness," Collins said. "Around holidays we'll have Thanksgiving and Christmas parties, food giveaways, and more."

And if the youth need services that Mr. And Ms. Mentoring doesn't have readily available and needs an extra helping hand, they can direct them to psychiatrists, medication, and additional support.

Mr. And Ms. Mentoring first opened for business in 2018; however, Collins – who has a Master's Degree in social work – had already been assisting vulnerable individuals for years.

"I'm also the owner of the Stress and Anxiety Center, which is a mental health practice," he said. "We originally started with just therapy, but then we noticed that our clients needed additional wraparound services, so that's when we decided to start our not-for-profit as well."

All the counselors at Mr. And Ms. Mentoring are highly-qualified with extensive case management, social service, and minority/cultural experience, ensuring that no matter what a child's background, there will be someone who can see things from their perspective.

Mr. And Ms. Mentoring is a grant-funded organization, so there are no costs associated with their services, as long as qualifications are met.

Mr. and Ms. Mentoring is typically assisting between 75 and 100 troubled youth at any given time; however, Collins said that all of the hard work is more than worth it to set a troubled child on the path to a better future.

"This is a passion for me, so I decided to make it my number one priority because it's something that I deal with personally," he said. "I can relate to these kids, and it's very fulfilling that I'm able to make such a big impact."
