OGSI Answers - Troubleshooting FAQs for Turbine Flowmeters

DUBAI, UAE - Jan. 27, 2022 - PRLog -- A turbine flowmeter is important for high-class metering of crude oil and other refinery products. Dubai's most credible metering product manufacturer is known for producing the most dependable turbine meter for a spectrum of uses including crude oil custody transfer, crude oil allocation metering, onshore and offshore condensates, crude oil, and other hydrocarbons pipeline metering, amongst many others.

However, there are a few questions that are commonly asked by flowmeter users such as:

What is the most common metering interruption?

Debris in the meters might cause readings to be abnormally high, low, or absent. The use of a strainer or filters ahead of the meter can fix this problem. All meter installations where debris or particles may be present in the flow stream should use these.

What if the meter shows a low reading despite the absence of debris?

Examine the turbine for any debris that may be clogging it. Because certain debris, such as Teflon tape, can't be spotted by looking through the meter, it is necessary to remove the internals for a complete examination.

Check for rotor or shaft failure, bearing attrition, and external variables that are decreasing flow, such as a valve, a blocked well, an improper divisor, a faulty totalizer, or a shaft damaged on one side of the rotor.

What causes turbine flow meters to display a higher reading than the real flow?

-
Debris obstructing portion of the meter's intake
- Upstream of the meter, a partially closed valve or other obstruction
- Too close to the upstream end of the meter is an elbow, tee, or other flow diverter. The fluid's viscosity is being measured.
- Misalignment of the turbine flowmeter or flow line gaskets
- In the pipe or meter, there is a deposit of wax or scale.
- Using the wrong divisor
- A totalizer that isn't working properly.
- A defective or malfunctioning magnetic pickup.
- Vibrational noise or noise from a neighboring energy source

When should you change a rotor and vane kit due to bearing wear?

Bearing wear on a shaft manifests itself as a depression at the shaft's end or a groove carved around the shaft's ends. The kit should be changed if a groove is discovered.

How to examine pickups?

An ohmmeter can be used to test the pickup, or it can be linked to a functional readout device.
