Working Principle of Turbine Flow Meters

A turbine flow meter uses mechanical movement inside the meter for flow calculation purposes. The device comprises a rotor with blades mounted on a sturdy bearing. It is supported by a central shaft inside the meter. Due to the flow in the pipe, kinetic energy is produced which makes the rotor spin. Paramagnetic material is used for the building the blades and pickoffs are mounted externally and hence there is no direct contact with the fluid. A magnetic field is created in the pipe and when the blades pass through the magnetic field, a voltage proportional to the velocity of rotation is generated. This voltage is used to calculate the flow rate.
