Follow on Google News | ![]() DKBmed Launches New Webcast: Managing MS in Era of COVID-19By: DKBmed The program can be found at covid19.dkbmed.com/ As a condition with no cure, MS is managed through the use of immunomodulatory, disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). Although these medications are effective for patients with relapsing-remitting MS, the treatments elevate the risk for opportunistic infections. Results from studies suggest that many people diagnosed with MS, particularly those with comorbid conditions, have a heighted chance of developing severe cases of COVID-19. Additionally, some evidence indicates that certain classes of treatment are associated with COVID-19 severity. Because the likelihood of complications from COVID-19 is heightened in this patient population, clinicians need to take steps to mitigate risk and promote patient safety. "COVID-19 has dramatically altered the treatment of patients with chronic conditions, and those with MS are no exception" notes Joseph Sabatino, Jr., MD, PhD, Assistant Adjunct Professor, Department of Neurology at University of California San Francisco. "As our understanding of how to combat COVID-19 evolves, so too must our strategies for caring for patients with MS. We need to be knowledgeable about strategies that maintain patient safety without sacrificing treatment efficacy." The webinar allows learners to engage with the latest data on treatments, results from studies on the effects of COVID-19 on patients with MS, as well as recommendations published by the National MS Society. Each participant in the program will also have access to a personalized learner dashboard that promotes active study and deeper dives into specific topics of interest.
