ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Feb. 11, 2021 - PRLog -- The St. Johns County Education Foundation which operates as INK! (Investing in Kids), has an ongoing mission to provide innovative programs and classroom resources to promote the academic success of students in the St. Johns County School District, Fla. Since 1998, INK! has been the exclusive umbrella agency for Take Stock in Children® (TSIC), a statewide non-profit organization that offers low-income, at-risk students with a unique opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty through education, college tuition, scholarships, mentors, and goals for a better life.

Students are selected for TSIC when they are in the eighth grade in St. Johns County public schools. Upon acceptance into the program, students each sign a contract to maintain a 2.5-grade point average (GPA), stay in school and remain drug and crime-free.

According to James "Jim" Wheeler, Take Stock in Children Program Director with INK!, during the current 2020-21 school year, eighth-graders are eligible to apply for enrollment between now and the application deadline on March 8. For more information and an application, email James.Wheeler@stjohns.k12.fl.us or visit the website at  https://ink-stjohns.org/programs-tsic/.

In exchange for completing the program, students receive a minimum of a 60-credit hour scholarship to attend a public Florida post-secondary educational institution of their choice. To date, more than 24,000 children throughout the 67 counties in Florida have received the opportunity.

For example, approximately 63 active volunteer mentors will serve students during the current school year and will perform more than 1,400 mentoring sessions. More than 65 percent of TSIC participating students attain a college degree within six years. State college and university attendance averages close to 49 percent for all students, while nationally, approximately 11 percent of students from low-income families attain degrees by the age of 24. Wheeler added, close to 100 percent of local program graduates since 2007 have attended college immediately upon high school graduation.

The local cost to fund one student scholarship in 2020 is $3,779 and is matched 100 percent by the Florida Prepaid Foundation and the state legislature. Every dollar raised locally goes to scholarships and is matched one-to-one. No INK! or TSIC donor money goes towards administration of the program.
