What is a Reverse Domain Name System Lookup?
By: HTS Hosting
As is evident from the term itself, a Reverse Domain Name System (DNS) Lookup refers to the process or sequence that is the opposite or reverse of a Domain Name System (DNS) Lookup. In a traditional Domain Name System (DNS) lookup, the DNS or hostname is queried to get the corresponding IP address. This process is reversed in Reverse Domain Name System (DNS) Lookup. In it the IP address is queried to find the hostname. Reverse DNS lookup is a mechanism that is entirely separate from the traditional DNS lookup. When an IP address is entered into the Reverse DNS Lookup Tool, which is a tool meant specifically for this purpose, it becomes possible to find the domain name that is associated with that particular IP address. A specific type of DNS record called the PTR record is used to store the Reverse DNS records. Such a record is also referred to as a Resource Record (RR). The IP addresses of all systems are specified by it. For this purpose an inverted notation is used.
As mentioned above, a PTR record is used to store the Reverse DNS records. A pointer (PTR) record is a type of a DNS record. It aids in resolving an IP address to a hostname or domain. It serves the opposite function of an A record. An A record resolves a domain name to an IP address and it should be present for each PTR record. For the purpose of Reverse DNS lookup, it is the PTR record that is used. An IP address is used to get the hostname or the domain name that is associated with it.
When we mention the term "domain name", which refers to the address of a website that is typed in the browser URL bar to access a particular website, it becomes imperative to mention briefly about hosting of websites without which no website would be available to us.
Web hosting refers to the usually paid (unless it is free web hosting) services that are offered by website hosting service providers to store and deliver the files of a website. It includes leased server space, technologies and other related services that are needed to ensure that a website is up and running without any problem. There are various terms that are used to refer to web hosting services such as the "Best Website Hosting Service", the "Best Cloud Hosting Service" and even the term the "Best Windows Hosting 2021".
