With different states, cities, and municipalities handling restrictions differently, as well as the varying levels of infection, the unemployment levels have varied throughout the country. Because of the economic impact of the pandemic, AdvisorSmith took a detailed look at the unemployment situation in 389 metropolitan cities around the country and ranked them to determine the top 10 small, midsize, and large cities with the most and least unemployment driven by coronavirus. To determine the ranking, the study used data from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and compared the unemployment rate in January 2020 before the pandemic to the rate in April 2020 with the most recent data available. Interesting findings: • Cities most affected included tourist-driven economies in Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City. • Cities in the midwest in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio were the most affected in the country. • Cities in Connecticut and Missouri were among the least affected by coronavirus unemployment.
