WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - March 12, 2019 - PRLog -- Yours Humanly, an international nonprofit that provides underprivileged children in underserved communities access to quality education, has announced two new recipients of its quarterly Children Have the Power to Empower℠ Award, which recognizes children for their outstanding acts of goodness that encourage and promote a culture of education; exemplify innovation, problem solving, and positive change in an educational environment; and shine a light on the value of education and life-long learning.

The award showcases "service to others" in a meaningful way and demonstrates to family, friends, and community that even children have the power to empower when they lend a helping hand and an open heart.

2018 fourth quarter award recipients are Genis Drake, 11, of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Gavin Swihart, 9, of Romulus, MI.

"We commend these young people for their compassion and hard work, and for being the kind of people who think of others before self," says Yours Humanly Founder & CEO Sunny Singh. "They are making a difference in the lives of others and we encourage them to continue to do what they can to ease life's journey for those who struggle."

Genis Drake received the Children Have the Power to Empower℠ Award for the outstanding acts of goodness he performed by raising money to provide books for his school library. The donations he collected as he walked door to door for Dixie Canyon Elementary totaled more than $1,000. Deanna Flournoy of American Girl was so inspired by his act of goodness that she donated hundreds of books to his school library in his name.

Gavin Swihart, who received his Children Have the Power to Empower℠ Award before the guidelines changed to focus on education, is recognized for the outstanding acts of goodness he performs through his Big Heart Movement, which he created to help Detroit's homeless and less fortunate during the holiday season and winter months. The hot meals and bag lunches, as well as hats, gloves, coats, blankets, and other essential items he hands out have made an impact on hundreds of people in need. Furthermore, the Big Heart Movement has become a community-wide project. He has inspired individuals, organizations, and businesses to join his mission, with his motto, "We see you, and we care."

Singh cites American author Richelle E. Goodrich, who wrote, Every sunrise is an invitation for us to arise and brighten someone's day.

"Genis and Gavin are living those beautiful words with their selfless acts of goodness."

Award recipients receive a personalized certificate and medal, and are profiled on the Yours Humanly website and through social media.
