NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Nov. 26, 2018 - PRLog -- Chicago has been ranked as one of the nation's most dangerous cities in America. And yet, just thirty miles west is Naperville, a national attention-receiving suburb that has been respected as one of the state's --and the nation's -- safest cities.

Within those two cities is a lesser known safety expert,  J.T. Patten, a former counterterrorism intelligence specialist who can be found writing military and spy thrillers in Naperville's coffee shops or can be spotted in some of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods conducting research for his next book.

Patten, who just released his latest techno-spy shoot 'em up Task Force Orange novel, Buried in Black through Kensington and Penguin, has nearly completed his next draft for The Presence of Evil, which took him from Chicago's South East Asian neighborhood around Devon Avenue down to Roosevelt Avenue in the Lawndale community.

"It's no surprise that Chicago is a great backdrop for a thriller. While the majority of the citizens of the city and state are wonderful people, we cannot deny that some nefarious activity exists -- or at least the potential. With a nexus often between crime and terrorism, my next book explores the possibility of a linkage of bad actors at local and global levels converging in the city with some of its unique features, safe havens, and potential attack targets. In my prior Safe Havens indie series, I had used the Chicago setting in Beverly, the Loop, and the Englewood neighborhood. They say, 'Write what you know.' Well, I know terrorism and I know Chicago," said Patten while drinking a black Starbuck's coffee.

Patten, who spent over a decade supporting special mission units and the intelligence community with analysis, planning, and covert capabilities programs, has left work in the Northern Virginia beltway and military bases and currently provides Illinois with infrastructure protection advice to businesses and the law enforcement community at city, state, and federal levels. "As a former red team leader for threat assessments, I'm happy to be able to share some of my past experiences with Chicago and its suburbs to help protect across fraud, cyber, and more violent attacks," says Patten. "We've already made some impacts bringing attention to risk indicators that can be shared commercially and with agencies such as the FBI."

When asked if he contributes to the well-being of Naperville, Patten laughed, "No, I think Naperville's resources are doing just fine on their own. I'm always here to help and to keep my eyes out like everyone else, but I've had the pleasure of meeting some of the city's wonderful first responders here, plus, there is no shortage of concerned parents keeping 'the ville' vigilant."
